Fo Guang University, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education of Taiwan, recently hosted 20 Indian participants for a ten-day immersive exchange program from November 1-10, 2024, as part of the New Southbound Policy Project of Taiwan. This initiative focused on fostering development, partnerships, and cultural exchange, reinforcing Taiwan’s dedication to meaningful relationships in South and Southeast Asia. The project exemplified Taiwan’s commitment to international collaboration and highlighted its progressive approach to NGO diplomacy and cultural connectivity.

Welcoming Ceremony and Cultural Introduction

The program began at Fo Guang University with a warm welcome and a tour of the Million-Member Fundraising Campaign Memorial Hall, illustrating the university’s rich heritage and the influence of Master Hsing Yun. Participants attended a Chinese language class, learning basic Mandarin phrases and practicing introductions. The day ended with a visit to Jiaoxi Street’s hot springs, offering a relaxing immersion into Taiwanese culture.

Exploring Taiwanese Heritage

Participants explored Taiwan’s cultural tapestry through visits to Wai Ao Beach, the National Center for Traditional Arts in Yilan, and the vibrant LuoDong Night Market. This blend of tradition and modernity fostered cross-cultural appreciation and strengthened bonds between India and Taiwan.

Academic and Cultural Exploration

On November 4, participants attended the inauguration ceremony of Fo Guang University’s new president, Dr. Chao Han-Jie. Engaging sessions at the College of Humanities featured Tai Chi performances, music, and discussions on literature, offering insights into Taiwan’s academic landscape. The College of Creativity and Technology introduced innovative VR technology, film production, and creative traditional crafts, showcasing Taiwan’s strides in modern education.

Culinary, Artistic, and Religious Discoveries

Participants experienced Taiwan’s culinary heritage through tastings at the College of LOHAS Industry’s culinary labs. Visits to Lan Yang Temple and the Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery deepened their understanding of Taiwan’s religious traditions, while a calligraphy class allowed them to practice the art of Chinese writing.

Exploring Taiwan’s Landmarks

The participants visited iconic sites such as Taipei 101, Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, and Taipei Fo Guang Shan Temple, rounding out their Taiwanese experience with excursions to renowned night markets. This holistic approach emphasized Taiwan’s welcoming attitude towards its Indian partners, as guided by the Ministry of Education of Taiwan’s New Southbound Policy initiative.

The closing ceremony marked the project’s successful conclusion, featuring heartfelt speeches and certificate presentations.
